Mikel is always sharing the compassion brought out in him by working in the medical field.
His daily activities include scrubbing in and assisting doctors and monitoring cases.
Mikel’s Roots
He didn’t think he was cut out for medical field, but he heard that Blinn College was opening a radiologic technologist school and felt that healthcare would provide him a stable career. What surprised him most was how working in the medical field brought out compassion in him that he didn’t know he had. Helping patients, putting them at ease, and having them depend on him really brought that compassion to light. After graduating with Blinn College’s second class, he worked in different clinical settings part-time, but he joined the CHI St. Joseph Health team in 1992 and has been there ever since. Nothing compared to the atmosphere and staff here.
Keeping Patients at Ease
His philosophy of care is about treating everyone with respect and keeping them at ease. While the equipment can be intimidating and the situation difficult, Mikel gives patients a smile and says something corny to make them feel relaxed.
Mikel’s Favorites
Outside of work, he likes to golf and spend time with his three children. What he likes most about the hospital is the people. He knows the maintenance staff, cafeteria staff, and the healthcare providers as all great people, always friendly and putting patients first. He is excited about the partnership with Catholic Health Initiatives and its positive impact on the quality of care for the community. He’s from a small town originally and is glad his community has that same small-town, easy living feel.
